Iran’s goal in Lebanon: drive out Americans, like Afghanistan

Iran has a target in Lebanon and that is to send tankers with fuel to Syria which will help make Lebanon less dependent on the West. Like many Iranian policies, such as uranium enrichment, the current policy is more complex than the Western media portrayed. Iran likes to play foreign relations with a mixture of threats, attacks and diplomatic and economic initiatives. It does it like a game of chess. Iran openly boasts of its complex, multi-layered approach.

As far as Lebanon is concerned, the appearance of one or more tankers off the Syrian coast in the days and weeks to come, may in fact be just the tip of the iceberg of what is really going on. . Oil tankers can be a distraction. We know that Hezbollah bragged about the arrival of these Iranian tankers off the Syrian coast. tweeted on September 14: “Visual confirmation: Iranian tanker FAXON (9283758) unloads 33,000 tonnes of diesel. Unable to deliver directly by sea to Lebanon due to sanctions, the ship instead traveled to Baniyas, Syria, for a land transfer. Will require 1,310 truck loads.

We now know that one of the tankers of interest is off the Syrian coast. But what does Iran say? Pro-Iranian media such as Al-Mayadeen boast that Iran is expelling the United States and its American partners from the region through its “axis of resistance.” This resistance includes Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iranian forces in Syria, the Houthis in Yemen, and pro-Iran militias in Iraq.

An article from Al-Mayadeen details how Iran sees this success. “It is assumed that the decision of the US administration to allow the Lebanese government to communicate with the Syrian state in order to import Egyptian gas was not characterized as exceptional or in response to the state’s request. Lebanese to be exempted from complying with the sanctions of the Caesar law.

“Its introductions were not based on an official Lebanese demand to deal with the collapse of the Lebanese state, but were the result of an American assessment that the siege imposed in order to quell resistance there. did not lead to the desired result. result, ”noted an article this week.

What does this convoluted word salad mean? This means that Iran and Hezbollah waited while the United States used sanctions to isolate the Syrian regime. The sanctions have also had the effect of apparently harming the Lebanese economy. Lebanon is in economic free fall. Iran then designed to send gas via Syria to Lebanon to show how it is helping Lebanon.

But what was the assessment? Iran sees how it staged a collapse in Lebanon. “As a result of this siege, the foundations of the Lebanese state collapsed and its tools weakened, while the resistance managed to adapt to this reality to build on it in an integrated project that would emerge. the Lebanese state of dependence on the tools of American power was imposed on it.

This means that Iran handed the United States a catch-22. The objective: to get the United States to rely on Syria, a regime allied with Iran. At the same time, the aim was to reduce American influence in Lebanon. The United States has supported the Lebanese armed forces in the past and intervened in Lebanon in the 1980s.

Iranian Tasnim News also states Tehran’s target. “In the first stage, as mentioned, the resistance prevented the achievement of the American objectives by refusing to fall into the trap of the enemy, despite all the pain and suffering the people endured.

In the second stage, with a strategic decision to break the siege and cross the political vacuum towards economic transformation with the help of the East, it dealt a fatal blow to the enemy. The resistance’s first action in this regard was importing fuel from Iran and suggesting that Iranian and Eastern companies could resume exploitation of energy extraction in Lebanon. Iran’s goal is to push Lebanon further into Iran’s clutches and also bring it closer to an Iran-China economic pact that emerged last year.

Iran sees Lebanon as part of the chessboard and wants to remove American pieces from this area. He cannot use military means, so he will use economic means. This comes in the context of the departure of the United States from Afghanistan. Iran believes that with a little nudge the United States will fold its cards in many areas. Lebanon is one of those regions.
